Hungary’s youth is pacing forward with ideas to change the future. In the spring of 2021, Samsung Electronics Hungary held the country’s first Solve for Tomorrow. Aligned with the universal purpose of Solve for Tomorrow, the program was launched with the hope to inspire the next generation and prepare bright minds with profound knowledge and a clear mindset for the challenges ahead.
The program’s success went beyond what was initially anticipated. It saw applicants from all over the country and the projects were just as fascinating as ambitious. Despite the restrictions due to the pandemic, almost 100 students from 36 different teams submitted their ideas in the hope of tackling societal problems. All of the students were passionate to learn and eager to contribute to society through the implementation of their knowledge.
To help these students turn their ideas into reality, Samsung employee mentors carefully guided them with tips to lay out the details of each project. To some students, the mentoring from STEM professionals was their favorite part of the program as they could learn skills they were not familiar with. To others, it was the overall process of teamwork they found the most helpful.
Capturing the opportunity
Members of Trois Cent Soixante Croissants, the winning team of this year’s Solve for Tomorrow in Hungary, say, “Solve for Tomorrow showed us that it is important to take the opportunities because we can learn a lot. We met many amazing people, especially our mentors, during these months and would like to thank everybody involved in this experience!” The winners won first place with the concept of Dioxiday, an eco-conscious browser extension that would offer sustainable alternatives whenever a user is purchasing something online. “We are extremely happy to have decided to take part in the competition. Mastering new tech information, developing new relationships, and even the big win would not have been possible if we had not chosen to participate.”
Gaining and utilizing the knowledge
Team BánkiRobot which was placed second in the contest says they learned a lot in the workshop conducted by Samsung mentors. “Thanks to the support of our two great mentors we could find more effective ways to build our prototype,” said the team who built a robotic exoskeleton to be used in the rehabilitation process of patients whose hands do not move easily. “On top of the result and prizes we won, the biggest gift we received is the knowledge gained.”
Working as one team
Children of the Nature came in third place with the solution aimed at trying to bring a little joy to all of our lives. They created the framework for an eco-gardening program that would be easily accessible to everyone and would teach children about the values of nature, producing food and working together. The initiative would extend to schools around the country and communities outside of schools could join too.
The members of Children of the Nature said, “It was very inspiring to take part in a challenge which emphasizes the importance of teamwork, creativity, development of design thinking and social responsibility.”
