Dreaming Big at Dream Class

South Korea | 2020 Samsung DreamClass

Point on 'South Korea' in world map

What was your dream growing up? For Korean middle schoolers Woori and Doori Shim, ‘dream’ seemed like something far away. But these teenagers’ approach to the future changed after spending three weeks with Samsung.

Basics take you to the farthest

Woori and Doori Shim, the twin brothers from rural South Korea, are two of over 1,600 teenagers that participated in Samsung Dream Class held in January 2020.

Robust interaction with their classmates as well as university student mentors, and over 150 hours of learning different subjects including software and coding moved them closer to a clearer future ahead.

Exploring with the mentors

“I did not know the camp required so much effort to study,” said the little brother Doori, who worked hard throughout all his classes with a strong commitment to learn more and do better.

Woori, the older twin, said, “Career mentoring with our mentors helped me learn the variety of studies and industries.” He added, “Majors like bioengineering and new materials engineering were something that I’ve never known. After talks with my mentor, I grew my interest in biotech!”

Building a new habit

For Woori, Dream Class was a motivation to build a healthy studying habit. “I never imagined that I would prepare for the next semester’s lessons on my own.” He continued, “It was hard at first. But I did it – and had the most fun out of it.”

Unlike their first perception of Dream Class as another assignment, the Shim twins say in confidence that it has become the steppingstone to their growth.

Students face numerous challenges of different magnitude in the next chapters of their lives. The lessons learned at Samsung Dream Class will follow, encouraging them to stay brave and resilient.
