Singapore’s Problem Solvers

Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2023

In Singapore, a Samsung survey revealed that 82% of the country’s youth feel empowered to actively address societal and environmental challenges. Most of the Gen Z is adapting their lifestyles to contribute to solving these problems, and they are steering their career paths toward roles that can make a positive impact.

Samsung Solve for Tomorrow provides the platform for these young individuals to translate their ideas into tangible solutions. Through the program, the students are constantly encouraged to think differently and seek ways to expand their knowledge in digital technology and application.

In 2023, Solve for Tomorrow Singapore sought two winners who demonstrated exceptional competency in utilizing technology to address various community issues.

Heat control protects nature

The final phase of Solve for Tomorrow saw Team SHMID.CO from ITE College Central achieve big success with their inventive heat-detection device.

“We wanted to create an affordable monitoring device that helps users to remotely manage charging batteries when they become excessively hot,” explained Shing Foo Chuan, the team leader. “Our solution alerts the users through both an alarm and an SMS notification the moment overheating is detected. What we want to also emphasize is that the sensor can automatically shut off the charger once the battery is fully charged.”

In addition to the fire hazard detection, the jury of the competition also praised Team SHMID.CO in their efforts to make environmental impacts. “It also conserves electricity and could make a substantial contribution to the reduction of carbon emissions.” The team remarked, “We are glad to be selected as the top team. It was an exciting journey to bring our concepts into a practical system suitable for all households.”

Improving the lives of the hearing impaired

“Among many societal challenges that remain in the responsibility of the community, our focus was on enriching the lives of hard-of-hearing individuals.”

Team Hearable from Nanyang Technological University won from the University Category with a two-part solution that enables hard-of-hearing individuals to communicate using a pair of AR glasses. These glasses can transcribe speech in real-time by leveraging AI, and a mobile application that works with the device allows users to turn type-written speech into spoken words.

“Solve for Tomorrow is an excellent proving ground for our team to test and refine our idea. As digital technology plays a vital role in shaping our lives, we will continue to harness its power to create a more inclusive society,” shared Christopher who led the team.
