Samsung Innovation Campus is Samsung’s global corporate citizenship initiative for technology education. In Türkiye, Samsung Innovation Campus aims to strengthen young talent in artificial intelligence technologies.
As AI continues to transform industries around the world, it is critical that its development is aligned with societal values, especially those related to gender equality. Unfortunately, AI technologies often reflect the gender biases that exist in society. Promoting gender equality in AI technologies is also necessary to ensure fairness, integrity, ethical responsibility, and economic benefits. Currently, women are significantly underrepresented in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields related to AI development. Issues such as unconscious bias, low quality datasets, and weak regulatory frameworks further exacerbate these inequalities.
To overcome these obstacles, Samsung Electronics Türkiye has started organizing the "Gender Equality in Artificial Intelligence" training to raise awareness among Samsung Innovation Campus participants and graduates. Through its valuable partnership with UNDP Türkiye, Samsung Electronics Türkiye is empowering young generations with artificial intelligence training. In addition to providing artificial intelligence courses exclusively for women, Samsung Türkiye is encouraging young minds to create a more inclusive artificial intelligence industry that reflects social values such as justice, empathy and respect for individual differences.
Doğa Ülkü, a Samsung Innovation Campus student, found the Gender Equality in Artificial Intelligence Technologies training incredibly informative and valuable. “It significantly changed my perspective on the projects I develop with artificial intelligence technologies and helped me identify areas for improvement. Studying the intersection of gender equality and artificial intelligence will enhance my ongoing work,” she said. The training provided suggestions on how to develop a more gender-sensitive approach in Doğa’s future projects and reminded her to consider different perspectives. “I believe that the trainings offered by Samsung Innovation Campus contribute to creating a more inclusive approach in the field of artificial intelligence,” she added.
İrem Zırhlıoğlu, UNDP SDG Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Coordinator, said “I strongly believe that AI has the potential to revolutionize our lives by providing unique opportunities and driving groundbreaking innovations that are accessible to everyone. However, to achieve this vision, we must strategically leverage AI's capabilities to address existing inequalities, particularly gender inequality. Through Samsung Innovation Campus, we have made significant progress in closing skills gaps and raising awareness about responsible AI development.”
