Innovation for Tomorrow

Türkiye | 2021 Samsung Innovation Campus

Point on 'Türkiye' in world map

Hello, I am Tolgahan. I am a fresh university graduate with a degree in computer engineering, and I can proudly say that I am ready for the next chapter of my life thanks to Samsung Innovation Campus.

Since I was a child, I have always thought that technology has made life easier. As I get to know more about technology, I become more interested in innovative products and services. I feel that I can contribute to the future by producing solutions in the organizations I'm involved in, and this whole process is my passion.

Coming across Samsung Innovation Campus

I saw an online posting for Samsung Innovation Campus in my senior year of university. As a computer engineering student, I was looking for opportunities in data analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT).

I first thought the depth of the program would be superficial, but when the courses began I experienced a much richer and comprehensive education than I had anticipated. The program allowed me to learn and apply IoT technologies and to develop a social innovation project with this knowledge.

This is the part I liked the most about the program: learning that IoT applications can be incorporated with various technologies, different programming languages, and network protocols. The students were encouraged to learn all of these technologies and to use the one we wanted. Solving a real-life problem by analyzing and developing a solution of my own contributed to improving my engineering abilities.

Hands-on experience developing a real-life solution

During the program, the students were given a chance to create an application or software. I made applications with many sensors, activators and software technologies during the training process.

After extensive research on the sustainability of Turkey, I learned the importance of rainwater storage for not only Turkey but the rest of the world as droughts have become a global threat. This is how I began the ‘Smartrain’ project. Smartrain allows the rainwater accumulated on the roofs to be stored in a water tank, monitor the amount of stored water and use the water in a closed greenhouse. The entire system can be monitored and controlled from a web interface using the Plotly Dash application and IoT components I developed. The solution was successfully made thanks to the equipment and mentoring provided by Samsung.

I learned tremendously from the process of developing an end-to-end real-time system, and the level of my technical knowledge in this field has naturally increased to a skill that I can easily use in the future. Also, thanks to my experience in working with the Plotly Dash framework, I had the chance to work for Plotly as a freelancer after completing the program.

During my time at Samsung Innovation Campus, I realized that working on an IoT project was not just work but also fun for me. My enthusiasm for Industry 4.0 technologies has grown.

In the long run, I want to produce technology solutions that will contribute to a sustainable life. To be able to produce more versatile and more effective solutions, I will continue on the journey I have started with Samsung Innovation Campus and further my education in the field of IoT.
